I made this chic, but not so shabby pet bed for my grand-kitty (my daughter's cat).  My kitty is the model here.

If you have a cat, I'm sure you've already noticed that cats love to jump into, or crawl into boxes.  This gives them the feeling of being protected, like going into a cave.  This pet bed looks much nicer than a plain cardboard box lying around the family room. 

I made this one-of-a-kind custom leather pet bed out of an orange box, leather purse, old leather jacket, and some quilting batting. 

This bed would work great for a small dog too!

Here's how I did it:

• I used an orange crate for the base, and covered the sides with batting, so it would be nice and soft. 
• I cut an old black leather purse of mine in half.  This was the perfect size to put over the ends of the bed. 
  
• I cut batting to fit the pieces I cut, but kept it a little smaller, about an 1-1/2 inch from the 3 of the edges.
• I cut up an old worn leather coat to use for the inside walls, and sides of the pet bed.
• I used a glue gun to glue the pieces together.  I didn't use a sewing machine at all, or even a needle!
  
• Notice the cording on the black portion of leather at the end of the bed.  This is the flap from my old purse.  I just glued the brown leather around the box and then glued the purse end over top of it.
