The Schoolhouse restaurant was opened in 1962, in a 2-story Civil War era schoolhouse by Don and Phyllis Miller, with the idea that everybody needed a place to go and get a great home cooked meal at a fair price. It is still run by the same family, with son Chris at the restaurant, son Jeff at the General Store, and daughters Pam and Beth helping when needed.

Though not an official family member, "Chef" Pat Draper is as close as it gets, and is the one responsible for keeping the people coming back year after year. The menu is hand written on the original slate blackboard at the front of the old classroom, and to make you feel right at home, each of the large round tables has a lazy susan, so you can help yourself to all the cornbread, salads and vegetables that you care to eat. The fresh baked pies and cobblers are delicious, if you still have the room.

After dinner, you can walk the grounds and feed the goats and geese, or play a game of tetherball. Before you leave, make sure to stop in and browse the General Store, which is located in a refurbished barn out back. We have a lot to see, such as Ohio Amish oak furniture, old fashioned toys, afghans, and many other beautifully crafted gift, and home decorating items. 

The Schoolhouse was built in 1863, and is believed to be the first two-story school to be built in the renamed town of Camp Dennison, formerly called New Germany, which was a recruitment and training camp for the Union forces during the Civil War. Over thirty thousand troops came through the camp during the war, which also served as a hospital barracks for wounded soldiers.

Abraham Lincoln visited the wounded soldiers at the barracks in Camp Dennison, during the war, and was said to have visited the Schoolhouse while he was there. One of the only military actions north of the Ohio River, and the only known death happened in Camp Dennison, when John Morgan and his infamous Morgan's Raiders, burned government wagons in a skirmish with Union troops.

The skirmish resulted in the death of Daniel McCook, who was not enlisted, but was riding with the troops as a volunteer. Several of Morgan's troops were captured, but Morgan escaped.

The camp was disbanded in 1865, but the railroad insisted the town retain the name of Camp Dennison. The Schoolhouse was a 2-room school, serving all grades through grade 8. Upstairs was the auditorium and community meeting room. The schoolhouse was a working school, until 1950, when the children transferred to the Indian Hill school system.
